T´AQRACHULLO + MAUKALLACTA + TRES CAÑONES DE SUYKUTAMBO

T’AQRACHULLO: THE INCA CITADEL THAT EMERGES AMONG THE CANYONS On the imposing cliffs of Suykutambo, with the spectacular landscape of the Three Canyons as a backdrop, lies T’aqrachullo – María Fortress, an extraordinary archaeological complex of 17.4 hectares that includes nearly 600 constructions, such as temples, ceremonial plazas, residential enclosures, and chullpas tombs. Its name comes from Quechua: “t’acra,” associated with bedrock, and “chullo,” related to frozen water, referring to the natural water formations present in the place. María Fortress is its official archaeological name. Since 2019, the Ministry of Culture has been working on the recovery and enhancement of this impressive heritage, with more than 300 restored structures, allowing a better understanding of the magnitude and complexity of this ancient center. The high density of its constructions and its architectural organization reveal that T’aqrachullo was not just any settlement, but an important space of political, economic, and religious significance linked to the Tahuantinsuyo. ✨ And the best part: you can still discover it without the crowds of major tourist destinations. 🏔️ T’aqrachullo is waiting for you. Come walk among its stones, uncover its history, and behold one of the most stunning landscapes of the High Provinces of Cusco. T’AQRACHULLO – MARÍA FORTALEZA History that emerges among the Three Canyons.
